Bugs: Maximum length strings crash Access Security Wizard

Author(s)
Tom van Stiphout
Note: This problem has been fixed in Access 2000.

Download Word Document (with screen captures)

Under certain circumstances, the Access 97 Security Wizard can cause a GPF in Access.  To duplicate the crash, follow these steps.

  1. Download the Access security FAQ by Andy Baron, Chris Bell, Mary Chipman, and Paul Litwin.
  2. Follow their 10-point process outlined in chapter 1 - What are the steps to secure a database?
  3. Realizing that breaking security is more difficult if the key is long, use the maximum lengths for all strings that you have to enter (see screen dumps in the Word document).
  4. Before you get to the point of running the user-level security wizard (point 7 in their list) make sure you've saved all imporant work. Then run the wizard and observe the crash.

Repeat the procedure using all 10-character strings, and you will be just fine
